Yet, the chip itself is only 1–2 cm2. So, there are a lot of chips on each wafer, and each chip may contain of the order of 1010 transistors (in 2013). Between the silicon body of the transistor and the gate is an oxide.

I should say that we got seriously into this working with Jon Bird, first when he was at RIKEN in Japan and then as he passed through ASU on his way to Buffalo. A second type of dot, shown in the figure was formed by etching the semiconductor region where the electrons existed. This produced a firm, lithographically defined dot, as shown in the accompanying figure. When we measured the properties of the quantum dots at low temperatures, we observed that the conductance would show amplitude variations as the Fermi energy in the contacts or as the applied magnetic field were changed.

In this scenario, each block forms what we could call a unit cell, with a lattice constant of one furlong (the edge of the block). In a real semiconductor lattice, the size of the unit cell is about half a nanometer. Before the city has been built up, each block looked just like any other block, and you could create the map just by a translation of one block in the east–west and north–south directions. These would form what we call a two-dimensional lattice (in the parlance of science fiction, this has been called flatland).
